On Tuesday, December 1st, 2015, SHRM@QU invited Jennifer McBurney, the Director of Operations at the Gather of the Vibes Music Festival, to speak to their chapter. Jennifer spoke about how she made her career in the music industry and all of the hard work she went through. Today she holds a position that is typically held by men; she beat the odds. Throughout her journey in the industry to get to where she is today, Jennifer held a wide range of positions that allowed her to see the different aspects and roles in her industry. The biggest piece of advice that she gave was that it is very important to understand these different areas and roles in an industry. It is key because you cannot successfully manage people if you don’t know how to do their job yourself.
Jennifer McBurney also stressed that it is very important that as a manager you successfully relay information to coworkers and those being managed. Without relaying information properly it can make a job difficult when not everyone is on board.
Students were curious about where she begins to execute her vision or plan. Her tip: you should never become complacent or comfortable because a “curve-ball” can always be thrown your way that will cause a hiccup in your plan. Even when you feel ahead of your work and are on time, always prepare for a hiccup to come along so there are no surprises.
Jennifer McBurney was incredibly insightful to members about the industry she works in. The advice she gave can be taken beyond the music industry and applied to any future career.
